DAVAO CITY – Mayor Rodrigo Duterte tied Interior Secretary Mar Roxas in the third spot in the recent Social Weather Station survey on the best leaders who should succeed President Benigno Aquino in 2016.

The survey was conducted on March 20-23 using face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults nationwide. The survey has a sampling error margins of three percent for national percentages, and six percent each for Metro Manila, Balance of Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

SWS said the area estimates for margin of errors were weighted by National Statistics Office medium-population projection for 2015 to obtain the national estimates.

The respondents were asked to give three names on who is the best leader to succeed President Aquino. No list was provided for them.

Duterte, who previously got five percent in the November 27-December 1 survey, now has 15 percent, in the same third spot as Roxas, who lost four percentage points from his previous 19 percent.

Vice President Jejomar Binay lost one point from his previous 37 percent, but still lead the survey. Sen. Mary Grace Poe-Llamanazares remained in the second spot with a 10 point increase from 21 percent to 31 percent.

Tagum City Councilor Nicandro Suaybaguio said the result “goes to show that Mindanaoans [have] a big opportunity if Mayor Duterte will be the next president of our country.”

“Mayor Duterte is gaining popularity and support, not only in Mindanao but in other parts of the country and I hope Mindanaoans will lead the campaign. After all if Mayor D [wins], it’s a huge victory [for] every Davaoeño,” Suaybaguio said.

“I hope the Filipino people will give chance to a president from Mindanao,” Suaybaguio said.

Meanwhile, a religious worker from Sta. Ana church here said she would rather have Duterte serve only in Davao City.

“Davao lang siya uy (It would be better if he stays here in Davao),” Conchita Du, 58 years old, told Davao Today.

Du said she believes Davao City will remain peaceful if Duterte remains its mayor.(davaotoday.com)
