DAVAO CITY, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte’s three-day visit to Japan is expected to benefit Mindanao which the President said will be a focus of the talk.

“Mindanao would be the central focus as together with Japan, we shall seek to put on track this island regions, towards a just and lasting peace and development,” Duterte said during his departure speech at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Duterte is also expecting to meet with Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who invited him on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation meeting in Vientiane, Laos in September.

Duterte described Japan as a “valued strategic partner and one of our true friends”. He also called Japan ast Philippines’ top trading partner.

“We will discuss greater political, social and defense cooperation, particularly in the maritime domain, awareness and maritime security. With Japan as the Philippines top trading partner, I shall seek the sustainment and further enhancement of our important economic ties,” he said.

Duterte also said the country can tap Japan’s expertise in developing high quality and modern public transportation.

Duterte assured that he will advance an independent foreign policy with Japan similar to his engagements with other countries.

“I seek to advance our national interest in this official visit to Japan, I will remain true to my sworn oath as your president,” he said. (davaotoday.com)
