DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Updated as of 4:42 pm February 9, 2017)— Glenn Ramos, 40, who was killed in an alleged shootout with combined forces of the police and military on Monday afternoon, February 6 in this city was a former coordinator of Bayan Muna partylist, an activist leader here said.

In an interview with Davao Today, Sheena Duazo, spokesperson of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) – Southern Mindanao, said that Ramos was subjected to surveillance when he was active in the militant organization.

“He has been monitored for a long time. Years ago, Karapatan documented his case of being harassed by the military,” Duazo said.

She said Ramos’ case was a clear “coercion and conversion efforts,” based on the record of human rights group Karapatan.

Meanwhile, Ramos’s family pointed out that he worked as a construction worker at the time of his death, refuting the earlier claimed of the military that he was an NPA supply officer.

Early on, the Crime and Investigative and Detection Group of the Davao City Police Office claimed that Ramos had refused to submit himself and drew a weapon that led to a brief firefight.

The military in a statement said Ramos had a standing warrant of arrest before 11th Judicial Region, Branch 6 for attempted homicide.

The CIDG sought police assistance which fielded the Special Weapons and Tactics unit claiming that Ramos was “armed and dangerous.”

The shoot-out injured Ramos. He was brought to the hospital but was declared dead-on-arrival.

The Army added that the police recovered “a caliber 38 pistol with five live ammunition and a fired cartridge, a fragmentation grenade, one piece of an improvised explosive device mounted with electrical wire and live 7.62 mm ammunition” from Ramos’ possession. (davaotoday.com)
