STO. TOMAS, Davao del Norte, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Sto. Tomas Municipal Office has tapped 422 public school teachers to serve as Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) and support staff for the upcoming May 13 elections.

This was shared by Raquel Samsona, Comelec-Sto. Tomas’s assistant election officer, to davaotoday.com, saying they already have a final appointment for these public school teachers.

“Out of the 422, only 220 will be the Board of Election Inspectors while the remaining 220 will serve as a support staff to BEIs,” Samsona said in an interview.  The said teachers will be deployed to 24 polling precincts and 74 clustered precincts in the town.

Prior to the 2010 Automated Elections, Comelec-Sto. Tomas has 349 established precincts which were shrunk to 74 clustered precincts for the automated polls.

Esther Sison, Election Officer III of Comelec-Sto. Tomas, in a text to davaotoday.com, said the Provincial Office in Tagum has set May 2, 2013 as the scheduled delivery of the 74 PCOS (Precinct Count Optical Scan) machines to this town which will be distributed to various public elementary and secondary schools covering the East and West District.  These are the La Libertad National High School, Balagunan National High School, Salvacion National High School, Marsman National High School, Sto. Tomas Central Elementary School-Sped Center, New Katipunan Elementary School, San Jose Elementary School, Apitong Elementary School, Nafco Central Elementary School, Balagunan Elementary School, Bobongon Elementary School, Tulalian Elementary School, San Isidro Elementary School, Talos Elementary School  and New Visayas Elementary School.

The Comelec here has asked for security assistance from 80 soldiers and 50 policemen who will be deployed in various precincts “to monitor and ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections.”

Meanwhile, Sison said election paraphernalia were already deposited at the Municipal Treasury Office.  This include cluster precinct numbers, paper seal, certificates of votes, official receipt of election returns and envelopes — the usual forms and supplies used for the election.  (Mart D.
