DAVAO CITY, Philippines — National labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno slammed Wednesday Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III for its failure to end the job contractualization, a campaign promise of the Duterte administration.

“Secretary Bello has failed to deliver President Duterte’s promise to heed our demand to end contractualization,” Elmer Labog, KMU chairperson said in a statement.

Labog said that Bello rejected the labor sector’s demand to end all forms of contractual employment when he issued the Department Order 168, legitimizing contractual employment schemes which he claimed that “sided with big businesses and labor contractors.”

KMU criticized Bello for adopting the Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines and the Philippine Association of Local Service Contractors labor policy.

“We are enraged over Bello’s pro-capitalist and pro-contractualization stand in upholding the ‘win-win’ solution which aims to further deny workers’ rights to security of tenure by allowing the proliferation of contractual employment schemes through labor outsourcing,” Labog said.

Labog also urged President Rodrigo Duterte to take decisive steps in fulfilling his promise to heed our demands to end contractualization.

“As the administration fails to deliver its promise, more and more workers are being subjected to contractualization’s gross violations of labor rights,” he said.

KMU also called on workers to show outrage over Bello’s “pro-contractualization stand” and to demand that Duterte fulfill his campaign promise. (davaotoday.com)
