DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio extends sympathies to the families of victims of the twin bombings in Sulu, which happens a week before Davao City commemorates the Roxas Night Market bombing.

“We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families of those who died– who were casualties of the bombing. We hope that those who are wounded, they would get well and feel better soon,” the mayor said.

On Monday August 24, two explosions near the town plaza in Barangay Walled City in Jolo, Sulu killed 14 and wounded 24 others. Most of the casualties are soldiers.

Mayor Duterte said that bombings are part of the “reality in Mindanao” and stressed that Davao City is not immune to attacks.

Authorities are still probing the incident but initially point out the perpetrators as “suicide bombers” linked with the Abu Sayyaf Group.

The city mayor reminded the public of the Task Force Davao’s Culture of Security where citizens have to do their part in volunteering for security checks and be on alert for security concerns.

She reminded the public of the September 2 Roxas Night Market bombing in 2016 that killed 15 people and wounded 69 others.

“Davaoeños should understand that [the bombing] is possible anytime if we allow it to happen,” she said.

She also asked the public to actively participate in any peace and order programs in their community and report suspicious activities to the authorities.

“That’s why we should support the culture of security here in Davao City,” she said.
