Over 300,000 candidates vie in Davao’s barangay, SK Elections

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Voters will choose from among a total of 334,716 candidates in today’s barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in Davao City.

The first district gathered the largest number of candidates under 54 barangays with a total of 150,919. The second district with 46 barangays gathered 95,797. The third district with 82 barangays had a total of 88,000.

The COMELEC confirmed there are no areas with no hopefuls.

There are a total of 1,223,500 voters in Davao City.

The poll body established a total of 37,648 precincts. They accounted a figure of 8,306 ballot boxes to be deployed in the entire Davao Region.

The poll body said it is 90 percent ready for the synchronized manual Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections today, May 14, 2018.

Atty. Krisna Samanetha Caballero, spokesperson of Commission on Elections (COMELEC) XI, said they have conducted trainings and instructions to the board of election inspectors (BEIs) and prepared the election paraphernalia to be used today.

“We are 90 percent ready… No more postponement,” she stressed.

The COMELEC accounted a total of 24,918 BEIs in Davao region.

Junielito Atillo, spokesperson of Department of Education (DepEd) XI, said they deployed about 3,000 public school teachers that will serve as electoral board members.

“The early action of the COMELEC had allowed us to respond early, properly and positively to provide human resource and to ready our facilities,” he said.

The authorities on May 11, Friday had deployed more or less 75% of their security forces in the region.

Police Chief Inspector Milgrace Driz, spokesperson of Police Regional Office (PRO XI), said they are mandated to be apolitical and arrest those violators such as with guns and goons by some personalities.
“We will do our best in manning the field especially the voting areas,” she said.

Driz also urged the citizens to report to the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) if there are any problems during the election so they can assess, validate and take an action. (davaotoday.com)
