Philippines: Susan Roces Asks Bukidnon Voters to Junk Garci

May. 07, 2007

Alarmed over news reports from Bukidnon of a perceived lead by Hello, Garci star, former Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano over 1st District Liberal Party candidate Malou Acosta, opposition stalwart Susan Roces has produced a video endorsing Acosta as the candidate to send to Congress.

Garcillano has been waging a campaign based on his relationship with Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. It is alleged that he has promised the people of Bukidnon great progress due to his influence over her and other administration officials because of his service to them in the past. It is public knowledge in Bukidnon that Garci claims GMA owes him a lot.

In the video, Ms. Roces reminds Bukidnon voters of the alleged cheating against her husband, Fernando Poe Jr., which she believes was orchestrated by Garcillano. She also goes on to ask them to preserve the sanctity of the ballot and the need to keep their votes secure.

Malou Acosta and her brother, current Representative Neric Acosta who is running for Governor, are deeply grateful for Ms. Roces encouragement. This endorsement could not have come at a better time and we thank Susan Roces wholeheartedly for her strong show of support. We are fighting an uphill battle for the honor of Bukidnon. We fear the shame and derision that will surely befall our beloved province if Virgilio Garcillano gains entry into the House of Representatives.

The timing is definitely right. In the large municipality of Quezon, Bukidnon, 16 ballot boxes were intercepted by PPCRV representative Fr. Dan Paciente recently. In three of the ballot boxes, he and members of the media found prefabricated election returns in favor of Team Unity bets and local administration candidates. These ballot boxes, along with another three found in Talakag municipality, are now in the provincial capitol, Malaybalay.

In addition, a Comelec ordered reshuffle of Municipal Election Officers took place last Friday. According to Rep. Acosta, a majority of the newly installed election officers are alleged to be Garci protges. Both Malou and Neric Acosta are ready to file a complaint protesting the reshuffle, claiming the move to be highly irregular. We must gird ourselves for institutional fraud. This prospect is disgusting, says Neric Acosta. — END
