Brutal murder of journalist in Sri Lanka’s Jaffna region

Jun. 03, 2008

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is shocked by the brutal murder of a television and radio correspondent in Jaffna on the evening of May 28.

Paranirupasingam Devakumar, 36, of Vaddukoddai, Jaffna, was hacked to death in Navanthurei by unidentified attackers while returning from Jaffna town. His companion was also reported killed in the attack.

The Free Media Movement (FMM), an IFJ affiliate, reports that Devakumar had worked for Sirasa TV and MTV for almost three years.

The IFJ vehemently condemns the murder of Devakumar, who is the ninth journalist or media worker to be killed in Jaffna, in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, since 2006.

It also remains extremely concerned about three journalists from Jaffna whose whereabouts remain unknown since their suspected abduction in 2007.

No perpetrators have been brought to justice for the murder, abduction or disappearance of a journalist or media worker in Jaffna.

Fear of violence is the alarming reality for all journalists and their families in Jaffna, said IFJ Asia-Pacific.

Only the political will of Sri Lanka’s Government and its authorities to investigate urgently and impartially all violations of journalists’ rights will provide solace to the families of those who have already lost their lives.

The IFJ joins the FMM in extending sincere condolences to the family of Devakumar and in demanding the Government immediately investigate his murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.
