DAVAO CITY, Philippines—The Commission on Elections on Wednesday said that incumbent Sangguniang Kabataan and barangay officials would remain in their positions until 2017.

Atty. Marlon Casquejo, assistant regional director of Comelec XI pointed out that the barangay and SK positions will not be vacated, noting that the local elections has been moved on Oct. 23, 2017.

Casquejo said the law stated that all current SK and barangay officials will hold the position until such time new barangay and SK officials will be elected.

He denied speculations that governors will be the one to appoint new officials for positions in the barangay level.

“No, because that is not written there in the postponement law in the barangay and SK election,” he said

Meanwhile, Casquejo announced that Comelec is now accepting new applicants for registration which started on Nov. 7.

The poll body said that it estimated that there are at least five million new registrants nationwide.

“As of now, there are still few applicants based in our office where we cater an average of 100 per day,” he said.

“We can’t achieve our goal if we are going to stay in our office. That is why in our resolution, starting next year, we will conduct satellite registrations,” he said.(davaotoday.com)
