CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – A woman gave birth just outside a birthing facility that was temporarily closed due to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Barangay Nazareth on Friday morning, Oct. 23.

Maximo Rodriguez III, Nazareth village chair, said the still unidentified woman is from the neighboring Barangay Indahag, about seven kilometers away.

Indahag has its own health center which made Rodriguez wonder why the woman had to go to Nazareth to deliver her baby.

He shared that his barangay’s health center, which houses the birthing clinic, was closed for disinfection since Thursday, Oct. 22, after one of the nurses tested positive for COVID-19.

The woman, who was accompanied by her husband, did not expect that the Nazareth health center was closed.

“We have an ambulance that should have brought the woman to the nearest hospital, but she said she could no longer hold it as the baby was about to come out,” he said.

Dr. Francis Alcantara, a newly graduate medical doctor, who lives just across the health center responded to the emergency.

“We were thankful that he responded right away. It was a safe delivery,” Rodriguez said.

The woman was immediately brought to the adjacent Barangay Macasandig where she was given medical care. (davaotoday.com)
