DAVAO CITY – A group of architects here planned to build a monument of Datu Bago, known to be a local chieftain who fought against Spanish colonization back in the 1800s.

Datu Bago was a chieftain from Sulu who fought the expeditionary force of Don Jose Oyanguren who wanted to officially establish Spanish authority and create a Christian settlement in Davao during the mid 19th century.

In a Philippine Information Agency dispatch, Ericson Europa, district director of United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) here said “the group wanted to honor the person whom the chapter was named after.”

The newly-formed Datu Bago chapter of UAP said that they asked the support from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) on the location of the proposed monument.

Board director of Davao Historical Society Foundation, Inc. Engr. Manuel Mendros said that he will be recommending that the monument be placed near the University of Immaculate Conception campus in Bankerohan, as this place was Datu Bago’s stronghold.

The project also aims to enlist talented Davao artists in creating the monument. (davaotoday.com)
