DAVAO CITY, Philippines — A medical foundation here spearheaded the observance of the World Psoriasis day to spread awareness to those patients and educate the public about the disease.

The Psoriasis Foundation of the Philippines here initiated seminars and free check-ups for the public during the observance of the World Psoriasis Day with the theme, “Breaking Barriers for People with Psoriasis” on Wednesday at the SM Ecoland Annex here.

The event aims to spread awareness about the disease to help patients cope up with the emotional stress that comes with it.

Liza Lagaret, secretary of the foundation, said that while psoriasis targets the skin and the joints and nails of the patient, “it is not a contagious disease but as of now there is still no cure on the disease.”

However, Lagaret described it as “a long-term disease since there is no clear reason where this disease came from although there are some who can treat it.”

Dr. Victoria Guillano, president of the Psoriasis Foundation of the Philippines said the foundation aims to help those who are diagnosed with psoriasis to cope up with the disease.

“Because they will go emotional especially those who don’t know that the disease is not contagious,” she said.

“Some people think that the disease is contagious. That is why there is a yearly “Hug Me” campaign to emphasize to everybody that the disease is not contagious,” she said.

Guillano said that the psoriasis is an auto-immune disease or genetic.

“If you have relatives who have psoriasis then there is a possibility that you too can have it,” she said.

Guillano also added that the disease is mostly common among those aged 40 and above.(davaotoday.com)
