Govt urged to act swiftly on Veloso’s recruiter

DAVAO CITY – A lawmaker urged the Department of Foreign Affairs to speed up the case charged against the recruiter of OFW Mary Jane Veloso.

“Now that Mary Jane Veloso has been granted a temporary reprieve, it is high time for the Philippine government to swiftly act on the cases that need to be filed against her recruiter, Cristina Sergio, in order to bring Mary Jane Veloso home,” said Gabriela Women’s Partylist Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan.

Ilagan said the DFA should also conduct a detailed audit of all Filipinos in death row.

“Account all that has been done and what needs to be done further so that it can be told that this government indeed is serious in saving the lives of Filipino migrant workers in death row,” Ilagan said.

“How many inmates have actually been given lawyers and interpreters? How many of these inmates have, like Mary Jane Veloso, clearly been duped into becoming drug mules? How many of these inmates in death row have been framed or merely acted in self defense? How many can still be saved?” she said.
