Local chocolate earns international recognition

DAVAO CITY – A local chocolate made in Malagos won an international award and gained high recognition by the Academy of Chocolate in London.

The Malagos chocolate won the bronze medal under the Best Unflavored Chocolate category in an international contest initiated by the Academy of Chocolate in London in which different chocolate manufacturers and makers from around the world have gathered last April 23.

“Quality must never be compromised, which was the one of the reasons why Malagos Chocolate got the award,” Councilor Marissa Salvador-Abella said in her privilege speech at the City Council yesterday.

The Malagos chocolate, also known as Malagos Premium 100% unsweetened chocolate, was produced by the Malagos Agri-ventures Corporation.

Malagos Agri-ventures ventured in producing single-origin cocoa liquor, a single-origin chocolate made from one variety of chocolate beans from a particular country or region.

“Davao is one of the top producers of cacao beans, producing 80% of the country’s beans,” she added.

The local hot chocolate, popularly known as “Sikwate”, is one of the most old-fashioned yet favorite chocolate drink in the world and is being sold in the city. (Mark Anthony M. Duran/davaotoday.com)
