Damgong Kalinaw Gitamplas

Diin nahimutang iyang buhatan ug puy-anang Lawaan.
Mianam-anam nag pahilayo kaniya ang mga silingan;
Nga nagsangyaw nga duna siyay gihablon nga damgo–

Halos di na mabati ilang alingisig ug is-is nga taghoy!”

Peace Dream Trampled Upon

Since that memorable day when songs and poesies
Crafted of pain and anger of the Avians were lanced
To the sky which virtually shredded the thick clouds
And floated like ocean waves in the firmament,

Flowed into the meshes of the branches and leaves
Of forest trees, causing goosebumps on the vines,
Shook the dewpearls on the young leaves to fall,
And the caterpillars and hairy worms to shiver in fear.

The songs and poesies, the rhymes and rhythmic lines
Projecting imageries of dismay, roused the dwellers
In dark shadows, opened the eyes accustomed to sleep
And to dreaming of stolen wealth and luxurious life.

Swept on all the nooks and spaces of Mindasilang,
The resounding echoes of mass protests that thrust
Feelings of deep regrets which Haribon trampled upon,
Commitments expected to be piggybacked to fulfillment,

But were after all masks of despicable hypocrisy:
“Where are the noble virtues he displayed in the past?”
They threw to the winds their varied words of reproach
All of them citizens of the jungle, especially of Pantaron,

The site of his high office and Lawaan dwelling place.
Little by little, his neighbors distance themselves from him
Sensing his clear alienation from the leader they knew
Who once proclaimed he has woven for them a dream—

The dream of peace for the entire realm of Mindasilang.
A dream that accordingly emanates from his realization
That the social ills are rooted in the heart of society –
The age-old injustices incumbent in the jungle lifeworld.

At the start, Haribon was certain the dream could be readily
Realized—the dream for Change, under the pact of handclasp
Between his turf and the warriors of the god Mandalangan
Who have been crafting freedom songs for long decades.

But the longtime dream and aspiration of Haribon promtly
Sank when he chose to ally himself with the three champs of
Violent discord sent by Bakunawa—the Tres Sawahes, whose
Deft hands in the art of chicanery he just couldn’t match.

And so in the incumbent state of affairs, the Tres Sawahes
Succeeded in all their schemes and are able to install
The reptilian junta now reigning the entire Mindasilang
And which has effectively desecrated Haribon’s dream.

Under this reptilian junta freedom is an alien notion,
The fundamental rights of the citizenry are trampled upon!
So many have been deprived of breath by the venomous
Bites of the snakes and scorpions of Tres Sawahes.

“Anyone can be killed with no one being accountable!”
Impunity is what thrives as ethos for the servants of
The reptilian junta law! And Haribon is the despicable
Executive implementer of this state of tyrannical rule!

On the other hand, the Tres Sawahes have had their snouts
Constantly folded back in wide grins, their necks swelling
In restrained laughters! Boundless their amusements, rejoicing
And boastful outbursts, most of all Bakunawa’s Sawahe Lorn!

Daily, he has had his stale words broadcast in sprinkles:
“Peace is near, the troublemakers are almost exterminated!
The rebellious Cicadas, Crickets and moths can no longer
Manifest their piercing hisses and whistling noise!”

And one day he spat out his mouth fluids in wild prediction,
“In three days the forest din shall be completely silenced.
The hisses of the troublesome Cicadas have died down
Only very thin sound can be ejected by their proboscis!”

And he ordered his big snakes and cobras to broadcast:
That forthwith, the warriors of gods and fairies will be next
To be targeted—the New Army of Avians—the followers
Of Mandalangan —mythic god of war and resistance.

Haribon has lost power to oppose and resist the Tres Sawahes.
He has resigned his will to control their public utterances;
And instead if contradicting them, he has intensified and
Worsened the clime of unpeace by his curses and hyperboles..!

His traditional rivals in political strifes—Gentry Hawk and Crow
Together with big winged beasts of darkness under Gentry Owl
Are just waiting for the most opportuned time when they will be
Tossed to rule Mindasilang rhythmic to Balunawa’s libidinous will.
