Leaders say BBL will help address violence in Mindanao

Jan. 28, 2015

Church leaders believe that the passing of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) will help in addressing the violence in Mindanao amid the recent fatal clash between Moro fighters and police under the Special Action Force.

“All the more I think we should be together behind the peace process,” said Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma SJ, DD, during a forum Tuesday (January 27) at the Patrick Cronin Hall of San Agustin Cathedral, Cagayan de Oro City.

“All the more we should avoid the polarization [in society] and move for the middle ground where the communities. aspire for peace,” Ledesma said.

Father Paul Glynn SSC, of the Interfaith Forum for Peace, Harmony and Solidarity secretariat, also gave his firm support to the BBL.

“We support this because we want peace. The BBL covers the creation of the Bangsamoro and I believe that the BBL is more urgent than ever.”

Senator Miriam Santiago is also determined to continue the hearings on the BBL despite the incident.

Santiago said that suspending the BBL hearings will be “counterproductive”.
