If I may correctly recite the Sibika at Kultura lessons during my elementary years, the three stars in the flag represent the three major islands and the colors blue and red represent peace over war. It affirms our belief, our conviction, our choice, that peace should reign in our land.

I don’t know if I can afford one if ever I will have kids in the future given the K+12 Law and the commercialization of education. It is a sad and infuriating fact that education should liberate us from the quagmires of poverty but it is the one thing which drives us to despair knowing that our children and our children’s children may never get one.

We cannot grasp the enormity of the responsibility we have at our hands as voters. But we are going to shape a nation which is mired by corruption, poverty, armed conflicts, human rights violations and economic sabotage.

And as the workers, farmworkers and peasants marched and braved the heat, with hundreds of red flags waving, they showed Aquino they are still a force to reckon with, undeterred despite the oppression they are experiencing from massive corporations who stole their lands and displaced them from their homes and livelihood.

As a leader, one must know when to attack and when to surrender. A good leader must have principles which must not only to be morally upright, but knows what is right and must have the conviction to stand by it.

Allowing a system that singles out those who criticize the government for its ineptitude and anti-people policies, only reveals the blackhole of impunity, a mockery of the right to suffrage and a joke against the whole electoral system.

The recent bombing in the area, which affected at least 44 families, including women and children, further paints a dark and grimy picture of impunity of the Aquino administration, a stark contrast to his brightly colored yellow lies and fairy tales of “matuwid na daan.”
