In New Report, Group Says ‘Inactive’ JI Members in Philippines Under MILF Protection

The International Crisis Group, considered as the best expert on terrorism in Southeast Asia, has released a briefing on Jemaah Islamiyah, the Indonesian terror network that has found its way to the Philippines, particularly Mindanao. The report essentially tells us what the JI has been up to, what is its present structure and whether it remains capable of more attacks in the region.

The report’s section on JI in Mindanao points out that, contrary to what the Philippine military has been saying, the “mainstream JI members” in Mindanao –about nine of them, including Dulmatin and Umar Patek –“have little to do with the ‘fugitives’ working with the Abu Sayyaf Group.”

It also says a dozen or more other “structural” JI members are under the protection of the Moro Islamic Liberation, although these members are said to be inactive and are “under strict orders not to engage in any violence and are considered integrated with MILF forces.”

Arroyo Orders DPWH to Fasttrack Repair of Bankerohan Bridge

DAVAOCITY — Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan, upon orders from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, immediately went to Davao City to personally look into the Generoso bridge 1 in Bankerohan that has collapsed when one of its pier gave way last April 12, this year causing heavy traffic in the City.

Philippines wants immediate repatriation of Filipinos killed in Iraq

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has instructed the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to immediately work for the repatriation of the remains of four overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were reportedly killed during a rocket attack in Baghdad, Iraq Wednesday.

Philippines thanks Saudi King for release of maid

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo thanked the Shariah courts in Saudi Arabia, including its ruler King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, for the release yesterday of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Sarah Dematera who was convicted to hang for allegedly killing her female employer in the oil-rich kingdom in 1992.

‘Grateful,’ Husband of Philippines President Withdraws Libel Suits

MANILA — Grateful for surviving a delicate open-heart surgery with a very low survival rate, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo withdrew today all libel suits he had earlier filed before the courts including those against media men.
