As classes open, teachers contend with poor school facilities while parents are confronted with the sheer economics of educating their children. And the kids? The education department inSouthern Mindanao has found a novel, if exploitative, way to make them pay for the government?s negligence and shortcomings.

DAVAO CITY — The indemnification of victims of human-rights violation during the Marcos dictatorship may be delayed some more as several matters continue to beleaguer their quest for justice.
Last Tuesday, Selda (Samahan ng mga Ex- Detainee Laban sa Detensyon at para sa Amnestiya) gathered some of its members in the city and region to petition for the reduction of litigation fees and expenses, from 30% to 10%.
The victims? lawyers in the class suit, which involves almost 10,000 plaintiffs who suffered from torture and other abuses during the Marcos dictatorship, want 30% of the indemnification funds awarded to the victims. The amount sought by the lawyers does not include the reimbursement of their professional expenses totaling more than $1 million, according to Nicanor Gonzales, Selda?s chairman in Southern Mindanao.

DAVAO CITY — Protesters from the various provinces in the region who joined the Independence Day rally today, June 12, denounced the military for harassing them and delaying them from joining their activities in the city.
Lisa Tindasan, 50, who had to bring her five-year-old grandson with her to the march because no else was going to take care of him, was in one of the vehicles held by the Task Force Davao (TFD) at the Tibungco checkpoint for more than three hours. She was with other protesters from Compostela Valley province.
