The cliché “silay nauudyukan” is reflective of a pattern of thought invariably sung by people in authority.  It is an utterance proceeding from an attitude that sweepingly belittles the people, especially the impoverished sectors.

And when the real facts as they happened did not conform with the exactitude of his plans, his fascistic nature as a patronizing authority figure surfaced. He was afraid the media was bound to gather the real facts from the ground. And this gave vent to his arrogant posturing and unreasonable utterances.

Today’s View: Kaamulan and the Essence of Unity

There is irony in the festivities of Kaamulan going on. The plight of indigenous peoples continue to deteriorate. With large-scale mining, illegal logging, land-grabbing, aggressive agri-business expanding in many parts of Bukidnon, there will be no more gathering of tribes in the future to speak of. By destroying their land and heritage, we are destroying their future and our history.

The tenacious alignment and adherence to a political entity should have been premised on a set of ideals and principles that provide firm basis for the party platform and concrete plans of action.  Each of the candidates in such group subscribes to these ideals and principles as his (her) personal commitment and as his (her) standard of conduct in governance.  It is the only enduring beacon that the party and its candidate must hold on to in steering their campaign to victory.

It is regrettable that the US commits this show of disregard to our sovereign rights — a treatment that ill-deserves the little brown brother’s loyal deference to the Big Brother.  To be sure, it is another act of insensitivity — or is it a willful disrespect? — that smears the colors of the emblem of equality among nations and races around the globe. At worst, it smacks of superpower arrogance.

There’s a Filipino saying, “Ang sakit sa kalingkingan ay sakit ng buong katawan” (What ails the little finger ails the whole body).  And this, I think, is what exactly lies behind the unfolding of a highway drama, the barricades in Montevista, Compostela Valley last January 15.

This government is berserk.  It is confronted with many irregularities in the relief service delivery.  As the people’s lamentation continues, the stories are getting bolder.  The “barricaders” are just one of those who dared to expose themselves only to tell the truth and now to face the court without any arms but the truth.

Today’s View: “Thy Womb” and women’s worth in the Bangsamoro

For those of you who still haven’t watched the indie film “Thy Womb,” you can come to Zamboanga City and still catch it. Viewers in Manila were complaining last month that they had to comb the metro to find Brillante Mendoza’s movie about a Moro woman from Tawi-Tawi who helped her husband find another wife so that the latter could bear him a child.  Filipino viewers are so loyal to Nora Aunor, who plays the female lead character; most of them tried hard to try to stop the film from being pulled out from major cinemas, despite hardly understanding (and accepting) the movie’s theme.
