K+12 more of a burden than a solution, NUSP says
The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) slammed the Aquino administration’s hurried implementation of the K+12 program, saying that the program is not the solution to the education crisis.
“The Union stands firm in its evaluation of the K+12 program as a decoy program implemented to try and fool people into thinking that the education crisis is being addressed,” Isabelle Baguisi, NUSP Secretary-General, said.
“But the alarming problems with curriculum revisions and additions, coupled with the still prevalent lack of teachers and facilities, is telling of how much the K+12 program is not really helping anything at all,” Baguisi added.
NUSP cited, the increasing cost of education created by K+12 program is discouraging for most Filipinos.
Baguisi said, “The government itself stated that only two out of 100 youths finish basic to tertiary education, mostly due to financial constraints. Obviously, adding more years to education will require parents and students to shell out more money, money that they likely do not have.”
“What we need now is ‘quality over quantity,” NUSP said as they call on the government to invest in basic needs such as teachers, facilities, books, and updated curricula to truly improve the standard of Philippine education. “We need the Aquino administration to stop its papogi projects for genuine programs that address real needs,” Baguisi ended.
