CAMP APOLINARIO, PANACAN, DAVAO CITY—A total of 278,000 pesos was received by beneficiaries of 21 deceased Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) members in a simple ceremony in the Army’s 10th Infantry Division headquarters 8:30 AM on June 7.
The claims checks amounting to 18,000 pesos each were received by the Cafgu’s immediate kin as part of the death assistance package from the Armed Forces and Police (AFP) Mutual Benefits and Assistance Incorporated facilitated by Lina Baldago, its Davao City branch head.
Out of the 21 deceased Cafgu, 16 died of natural causes three were murdered by the death squads of the terror group New People’s Army (NPA); and the remaining two died due to accidents.
In a statement, Maj. Gen. Carlos Holganza condoled with the families of the Cafgus as he acknowledged the sacrifice and service of the deceased. “This is only a small amount compared to the service which our Cafgus have rendered for our people, our flag and our country. Their sacrifices will forever be in our minds and we will continue serving our people the best way we can as a tribute and salute to our fallen comrades.” Holganza said.
Cafgus nationwide are serving as village defenders in far flung areas against attacks by NPA terrorists. They also act as anti-bandits and anti-cattle rustlers. Their services have been a major help in curbing petty crimes in remote communities where the presence of police and regular troops is thin.
In Southern Mindanao, unarmed and off-duty Cafgus have been the targets of killings by NPA death squads in line with the communists’ terror tactics to discourage village folks particularly Lumads (indigenous peoples) to join the Cafgu.
