Philippines president lauds Filipinos in Italy

ROME (via PLDT) — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo lauded Sunday the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Italy for their contribution to the Philippines? stellar economic performance and for the good reputation they carved for the Filipinos here and elsewhere in the world.

In her message during her meeting with the Filipino community at the Fontifico Colegio Filipino here, the President said the dollar remittances of the OFWs have contributed much to the growth of the Philippine economy.

IFJ shocked at murder of female Afghan reporter

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is shocked to learn of the cold-blooded murder of an Afghani reporter last week.

Ms Shokiba Sanga Amaaj, a reporter and presenter for the Pashtu language channel, Shamshad TV, was shot by unknown gunmen at her home on the night of June 1.

IFJ condemns growing curbs on media in Pakistan

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is deeply disturbed by the trend of increasing restraints on the functioning of the media in Pakistan.

The most recent manifestation of what is clearly a rising trend in intolerance of media freedom, comes in the form of a prohibition of live coverage of events involving the suspended chief justice of Pakistan, Mr Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

Israel/OPT: Forty years of occupation — no security without basic rights

On the eve of the 40th anniversary of Israel?s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Amnesty International today called on the Israeli authorities to end the land-grabbing, blockades and other violations of international law carried out under the occupation. These have resulted in widespread human rights abuses and have also failed to bring security to the Israeli and Palestinian civilian populations.
