Manila — ?Filipino laborers work so hard to keep body
and soul together. One of the basic needs they dream
of is a decent house for their family,? said
Senatorial Candidate Cesar Montano, in his Labor Day
statement to media. He disclosed that one of his
legislative agenda is focused at encouraging
Filipinos, especially the poor and the homeless, to
avail of government?s housing programs. He calls it
the ?Work-for-a-House policy? aimed at getting people
to literally ?work for their houses?.

In ComVal, Terror Reigns as Army Secures Firms

In Compostela Valley?s villages, a de facto martial law exists. Civilians have been tortured, detained, harassed and killed as the military increases its presence in the resource-rich province in order to protect, according to residents and activists, plantation and mining companies. The deaths of Grecil Buya in March and the killing of two civilians by soldiers last Wednesday were the offshoots of yet another case of ?development aggression.?

Grecil’s Parents File Raps Vs Soldiers; Holganza Doubts Girl Was Child Warrior

MANILA — The parents of Grecil Buya, the nine-year-old girl killed by the army during a firefight with communist rebels in New Bataan, Compostela Valley, on March 31, filed charges against the military before the Office of the Ombudsman.

Gregorio Galacio and Virginia Buya went to the ombudsman on Friday to file administrative charges against 2nd Lt. Francis John Gabawa and his men in a platoon belonging to the 67th IB who were responsible for Grecil’s death.

The soldiers strafed the victims when they failed to stop at checkpoints but according to the human-rights group Karapatan, the victims had difficulty stopping because, aside from the darkness, there were no signs or signals that a checkpoint was being conducted. The soldiers, Karapatan said, suddenly appeared from the roadside.

Filipino Youths in US to Hold Festivals in Support of Kabataan

New York City ? In the final two-week push before the May elections in the Philippines, Filipino youth, musicians, spoken word artists, organizers and allies are coming together in New York and Los Angeles to show support for the KABATAAN Partylist, the largest youth party representing the youth sector in the upcoming Philippine elections, and to call for clean and fair elections. Youth of KABATAAN-Ugnayan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Linking the Children of the Motherland), based in New York and New Jersey, and KABATAAN-Kabataang maka-Bayan (KmB, Pro-People Youth), based in California, will speak out for the rights of Filipino youth, both in the Philippines and here, in the US.
