Billions of OFW Remittance Destroy RP?s Basic Industries

MANILA ? The sparkle of billions of dollars of money sent by Filipinos temporarily or permanently earning abroad is blinding government and the overseas labor deployment industry, a lawmaker warned recently.

?The immediate windfall from the foreign currency remittances of our countrymen overseas makes it so easy to gloss over the reality that the diaspora of our skilled labor exacts a painful toll on the basic industries that should form the building block of a strong Philippine economy,? Congressman Roseller Barinaga said in a privilege speech recently.

Representative Barinaga of Zamboanga del Norte spoke at the Lower House seeking measures to check what he said was the unregulated outflow of critical skills and talents affecting the country?s strategic industries: aviation, electronics, shipping, steel, petrochemical, and telecommunications.

Mayor Bans Rallies During Arroyo?s Visit to Panabo City

PANABO CITY— Panabo City Mayor Rey Gavina appealed to opposition groups to refrain from staging protest rallies during President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo?s visit to Panabo city this week.

Gavina vowed not to issue a permit to any group who has plans to disrupt the President?s visit with protest actions.

?I?m wholeheartedly appealing not to stage (protest) rally during the President?s visit, I won?t give permit to those who will stage the rally except some other time,? he said.

Deadline for Tax Filing Is April 17

DAVAO CITY — Bureau of Internal Revenuer (BIR) regional director Atty. Marcelinda Omila-Yap announced that the deadline for the filing of income tax returns has been moved to April 17, 2006 (Monday) since April 15 falls on Saturday which is a holiday.

Omila-Yap urged the taxpaying public to file their income tax returns early to avoid the rush.

Davao Oriental’s Mt. Hamiguitan Vies for ?Hiyas ng Turismo?

DAVAO ORIENTAL — Awed by it?s distinct tourism site which is the Pygmy Forest in Mt. Hamigutan, the municipality of San Isidro is destined to bring honor to the province of Davao Oriental.

Just recently, Mt. Hamiguitan was nominated as ?Hiyas ng Turismo,? an activity designed by the Department of Tourism to discover more the tourism potentials in the country.

This was revealed by Lyrna June Palma, the Provincial Tourism Officer in the Province of Davao Oriental, who also said that the nomination was made in the national level.

?I?m sure that the people of San Isidro are now ready to boost their local tourism?, Ms. Palma said .

They were all gathered on Saturday to supposedly hear the pros and cons of the proposed constitutional amendment to shift to a parliamentary form of government. What they heard instead were the earnest words of their officials promising dramatic change in governance.

Worst, instead of a general assembly that people attended on their own volition, the gathering was marred by alleged deception and other machinations, allegedly done on orders by Malacanang.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government had earlier asked barangays (villages) across the country to hold general assemblies yesterday and on Oct. 21 to supposedly get the pulse of the public on constitutional amendments.

The assemblies are part of the ?people?s initiative,? one of the ways the administration is using to amend the charter, which requires the signatures of at least 12 percent of the total registered voters nationwide and at least three percent of voters in a congressional district.
