Davao Studes Win in Smart Wireless Apps Awards

Mar. 14, 2007

A presentation by the teams on March 8, and the evaluation of their working models during public demonstrations, will determine this years honor roll. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning teams and equivalent grants for their schools. Total prizes at stake come close to two million pesos.

Launched in August 2004, the SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards aims to give budding engineering students an opportunity to shine by recognizing their technology know-how and ingenuity, says Rolando G. Pea, SMARTs network services division head.

It is also a testimony to how well colleges and universities are able to extend the full advantage of being a SWEEP partner school to their students. Specifically, it shows how much they benefit from the continuing education on wireless technologies through lectures and trainings conducted by SMART engineers.

As early as their junior year, our students already attend trainings and seminars and are exposed early on to the higher technology. They also come to better appreciate the communication side of it. By the time they reach the 5th year they would have thought of ideas for the SWEEP awards, shares Engr. Rizza Kathleen D. Santos, ECE faculty of Fullbright College in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Also being held during the two-day event is the 3rd PalaECEpan competition that is made even more fun and exciting with its new quiz bee game format. It will test the intellectual prowess of the smartest engineering students from SWEEP partner schools. Cash prizes and trophies await this years champions.

Another highlight is a mini job fair hosted by the PLDT Group of Companies SMART, PLDT, PLDT Global, and e-PLDT (Infocom, i-Plus, Ventus, Netopia, LevelUp, SPI Technologies).

Participating students and visitors can also check out interactive booths and avail of free Internet surfing and free online gaming. Additional treats can be won in raffle draws and games.

Making this grand celebration of innovation and excellence all the more enjoyable are musical artists like Chris Cayzer, Kitchie Nadal, Lovie Poe and Dennis Trillo.

The event is held in partnership with Ericsson, Sysnet Integrators, Alcatel Lucent, Nokia Networks, Manila Bulletin, Cebu Pacific, Bayview Park Hotel, Infocom, Microdata, Smart Buddy, Smart Bro, Smart Click, Smart Money, Smart Entrepreneurship Program, PLDT, PLDT WeRoam, Netopia, LevelUp and Wolfpac.
