DCCCII sees growth of ICT, SME sector

Jul. 22, 2008

Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc. (DCCCII) president Simeon Marfori II sees expansion and growth of the information and communication technology (ICT) sector after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Company (PLDT) and DCCCII, paving the way to a wide range of ICT services to the chamber’s small and medium scale enterprises (SME) members.

The MOU was signed by Marfori and PLDT’s Katrina Luna Abelarde last July 27 at the Apo View Hotel Davao. The MOU is the first in the country where PLDT hopes to help SMEs foster connectivity and access to the latest innovations on ICT.

DCCII will provide the venue, linkage and technical skills to SMEs while PLDT will provide affordable, practical, scalable and managed solutions to these SMEs.

Marfori said that these are the elements needed for the growth of the ICT sector, which along with agriculture and tourism, are the focus of DCCCII for this year.

The more SME users of ICT the better it will be for the industry as it will be used to increase productivity and efficient allocation of resources.

Marfori also announced that negotiations were underway to pen an agreement with IBM to provide servers for SMEs.

Luna-Abelarde added that PLDT specifically created a SME Nation Group in January this year to help SMEs in the IT sector. She cited that, of the 300,000 SMEs nationwide, only 10-20 percent are connected to the internet and only 2 to 5 percent of these have websites of their own.(PIA/RG Alama)
