Philippines moves to address perennial school opening woes

MANILA — The usual classroom, textbook and teacher shortages that accompany every school opening in the country is expected to be a thing of the past as the government included these perennial problems among its priority concerns this year.

In a status report on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s priority projects and concerns released last Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo said a total of 412,707 classrooms are now ready for use in the coming school year,

Philippines kicks off school opening preparations with Oplan Balik Eskwela

MANILA — The Department of Education (DepEd) today kicked off its school opening preparations with the launch of Oplan Balik Eskwela (OBE), the department’s annual campaign to ensure the smooth opening of classes on June 4.

“Oplan Balik Eskwela is government’s effort to ensure the orderly conduct of the opening of the school year,” said Education Undersecretary for Regional Operations Ramon Bacani. “The project seeks to streamline efforts of different government agencies to address common problems usually associated with the opening of classes.”

Philippines tells village officials to avail of educational programs

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo urged today the semi-employed barangay officials in Sta. Mesa, Manila, to become computer-literate via government educational programs so that they could become competitive when searching for jobs even if they are already in their senior years.
