‘Abduction,’ ‘Harassment’ of Cotabato NGO Workers Riles Swiss Group

A prestigious Swiss development organization protested last week the Nov. 4 abduction of Lourilie Naiz and Mary Bernadette Solitario, staff workers of the Disaster Response Center Inc. (DIRECT) while on field work in Tulunan, North Cotabato. Soldiers from the 27th and 39th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army allegedly detained and interrogated the two women, and ordered them to strip. D.L. Mindanao Nuns Still at It, Condemn ‘Repression’ vs Church Workers

Catholic nuns in Mindanao have not stopped denouncing the police and the Arroyo regime for the “repression” of Church workers. In statements issued last week, nuns from the Missionary of Sisters of Mary, which was the target of the Nov. 1 police raid in Butuan City, and the Religious of the Good Shepherd urged authorities to respect human rights.

Bukidnon Farmers Ask DAR to Fulfill CARP Commitments

BUKIDNON — Some 1,000 farmers belonging to at least 13 organizations yesterday set up camp in front of the Region 10 Office of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in Cagayan de Oro City to demand that the said department fulfill its commitments on the implementation of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) in Bukidnon.

Can a Human-Rights Framework Help Peace Process?

A study on the role of human rights in peace agreements will be launched in Davao City and in Manila next week. The study commissioned by the Geneva-based International Council on Human Rights Policy sought to determine whether a “a fresh and new perspective of human rights in peace agreements” can help the peace process in the Philippines.
