For Davao folk, Havaianas are not just fashionista flip-flops

Rita Kanlogon, 42, a housewife from Lanang, said she learned about the durability of Havaianas through her friends from abroad. She said she bought each of her two teenage sons a pair of the flip-flops because their slippers often had to be replaced.

Environmentalists are saying that altering the natural conditions of these important bodies of water in Mt. Apo would mean loss of biodiversity and, eventually, the death of the mountain. This could spell disaster for the Davao region, whose lands are nourished by its natural topography, which, in turn, ensures the year-round bounty of fruits and produce.

From 7:30 a.m. to midnight, often up to the wee hours in the morning, the hum of construction work keeps people awake in the neighborhood at the back of the People Support and HSBC building along Jacinto Extension, where a four-story building to be rented out to a call center company is being built.
