As the city announced a shift in the way the annual Kadayawan Festival is celebrated — that is, for one, showcasing Lumad culture and tradition not for tourism’s sake — tribal leaders remain concerned that the festivities hardly depict the struggle of Mindanao’s indigenous peoples to pursue their unique way of life and retain control of their ancestral lands, which have been encroached into by big mining companies and plantations.
Sherad Anthony Sanchez, a young filmmaker from Davao City, has won the “First Film” award at the 18th Festival International du Documentaire de Marseille in France for his film Huling Balyan ng Buhi: O Ang Sinalirap Nga Asoy Nila. Another Filipino, Raya Martin, won a “special mention” for the film Autohystoria. Only 21, Sanchez has won other accolades for his first film.

Following the adverse reports against taxi drivers as mentioned by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte in a city governments regular television program Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has warned taxi drivers to stop their modus operandi of using tampered, non-calibrated or fast-metered meters, including illegal acts of disembarkment of passengers, misconduct and misbehavior against women passengers.

Aside from its non-pollutive effect, it is also very economical and very good for the owners and drivers as it will increase their income compared to the use of diesel/gas.”
