DAVAO CITY ? When she was a councilor of this city, Luz Ilagan championed the causes of women. More than any other women legislator in the city, she was instrumental in bringing to the ublicp’s attention the various issues and concerns that confront women in Davao City.

Last week, when she was elected as the second nominee by the Gabriela Women’s Party for the upcoming midterm elections, Ilagan vowed to continue these advocacies, this time on a national level but with a particular emphasis on bringing the voice of Mindanao women to the male- and elite-dominated House of Representatives.

Dumped Fetuses in Davao Worries Angging

DAVAO CITY — City Councilor Angela ?Angging? Librado-Trinidad has underscored the need in Davao City for an institution and a piece of legislation that will address reproductive health care for women.

Librado was reacting to the series of discoveries of aborted fetuses dumped in the city?s trash bins. She has been pushing to enact an ordinance that will comprehensively address women?s health because abortion, she said, has become one of the options many women resort to especially for those belonging to low-income groups who have unwanted pregnancies.

‘Biodynamic’ Products Now in Davao

DAVAO CITY — A store selling 100 percent pesticide-free food products will be finally opened here today, a move considered as a breakthrough in the growing world of alternative food production and consumption.

Opening the niche to the public is the Don Bosco Foundation for Sustainable Development or Don Bosco, a prime-mover in the science of biodynamics, an agricultural approach which recognizes ?the basic principles at work with nature and takes these principles to bring about balance and healing.?

Duterte Next Defense Secretary?

Mindanews reported yesterday that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is being considered as the next defense secretary. (We cannot provide the link to the story because the Mindanews website, as of 9 a.m. today, has been hacked.) The story mentioned the praises Duterte has received lately from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Senate president Manuel Villar, mainly for the mayor’s efforts to keep his city safe from criminals.
