Philippines: Negros killings — the trail of blood leads to Malacanang

MANILA — Alejandro Garcesa, 70, and Ely Tupas, 52, were killed, and six of their companions were wounded, by security guards of former landowner Roberto Cuenca right on the very piece of land where they were installed by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) last March 22.

Garcesa and Tupas were killed even as elements of the Regional Mobile Group (RMG), stationed in the hacienda to keep peace and prevent violence, watched the slaughter without a bit of concern.

IFJ condemns growing curbs on media in Pakistan

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is deeply disturbed by the trend of increasing restraints on the functioning of the media in Pakistan.

The most recent manifestation of what is clearly a rising trend in intolerance of media freedom, comes in the form of a prohibition of live coverage of events involving the suspended chief justice of Pakistan, Mr Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

Israel/OPT: Forty years of occupation — no security without basic rights

On the eve of the 40th anniversary of Israel?s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Amnesty International today called on the Israeli authorities to end the land-grabbing, blockades and other violations of international law carried out under the occupation. These have resulted in widespread human rights abuses and have also failed to bring security to the Israeli and Palestinian civilian populations.
