Irene Anoso, a nineteen-year old pollwatcher of Kabataan (Youth) party list in Brgy. Poblacion, Sariaya, complained to members of the People’s International Observers Mission (IOM) team in Quezon about being profiled, pursued, and sent malicious text messages by suspected military agents.

PHILIPPINES: Election violence and corruption expose the rotten state
of the justice system
With the conclusion of the legislative and local elections in the
Philippines on May 14, the extent of deaths, violence and corrupt
practices that have occurred during this electoral exercise is
extremely appalling. This violent exhibition of democracy has cast
serious questions upon the capability of the government, in
particular the Philippine National Police (PNP), to execute their
duties and responsibilities to protect the lives of the people,
enforce laws and uphold order. As of May 15, the PNP reported 126
deaths from election-related violence since the beginning of the
campaign several months ago. Each of these cases demonstrates the
ugly reality of the state of law enforcement in the country.

PHILIPPINES: Human Rights Council Elections: Philippines’ record must
preclude the country from the Council
The Philippines has presented its candidacy for re-election to the
United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC). The General Assembly
(GA) meets on May 17, 2007, to elect 14 of the Council’s 47 seats,
four of which are from the Asian region. Bahrain, India, Indonesia,
and the Philippines are coming to the end of their one-year terms on
the Council. India, Indonesia and the Philippines are vying for
re-election, while the Asian group is also proposing Qatar to replace
Bahrain.
