Philippines: Opposition Lawyer ‘Mauled’ by Camiguin Congressman, Ex-Gov

Political violence has descended upon the island province of Camiguin in Northern Mindanao.

An election lawyer of Liberal Party (LP) gubernatorial candidate Antonio Gallardo sustained physical injuries after he was assaulted and mauled last Friday, April 27, by political rivals led by incumbent Caminguin Rep. Jurdin Jesus Romualdo and his father, former Camiguin Gov. Perdo Romualdo, both members of the administration Lakas- CMD party.

Philippines Congressman tells AFP: Surface Joe Burgos’ son now

manila — Bayan Muna Rep. Satur C. Ocampo today expressed grave concern that a
son of press freedom icon Joe Burgos has become the latest casualty of
military-instigated abductions of social activists.

Ocampo urged the military abductors to surface Jonas Joseph Burgos who
has been missing since Saturday April 28.

Backsliders: The 10 countries where press freedom has most deteriorated

New York, May 2, 2007?Two Asian nations?Pakistan and Thailand?are among the countries worldwide where press freedom has deteriorated the most over the last five years, a new analysis by the Committee to Protect Journalists has found. Pakistan ranks No. 6 following alarming increases in the murders and abductions of journalists. Thailand comes in 10th because of the new military government?s sweeping effort to control broadcast media.
