Hundreds Demand Action for Truth & Justice for Fely Garcia

New York City, NY ? After ten days since launching the online petition, “Truth and Justice for Domestic Worker Fely Garcia!” over 500 individuals have registered support for the case of a 58-year-old Filpina caregiver who was found dead in her Bronx, NY apartment on March 14. DAMAYAN Migrant Workers Association, a 350-members strong community based grassroots organization led by Filipino migrant domestic workers in New York City, initiated the campaign after members reported about the disturbing death of a fellow domestic worker, Felisa S. Garcia. Ms. Garcia allegedly committed suicide and left letters, one of which stated that she was abused and harassed by her employer in the Bronx.

Davao Light-Assisted Lumad Scholars Get College Degree

Three of 20 indigenous people (IP) or lumads who are assisted in their college studies by the Aboitiz-owned Davao Light and Power Company through the Mindanawon Initiatives for Cultural Dialogue (Mindanawon) graduated last March 24, while one finished her course last October but joined the graduation rites also last month.

Solon decries arbitrary removal of 1.13 voters’ names from official Comelec list; demands Comelec explain the methods it used to verify the names

Anakpawis Representative and political detainee Crispin Beltran today said that the Commission on Elections should not have removed more than one million supposedly unqualified voters from the official voters list for the May polls.

The Comelec has removed some 1.13 million names from the from the list including the so-called “flying voters” and double registrants. According to reports, the National Capital Region (NCR) posted the highest number of deleted unqualified voters with 73,430 while in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) some 6,059 were removed from the list.

Philippines: San Miguel Corp. Sustains Growth Momentum in 2006

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) reported another strong performance in 2006 amid slower growth in incomes. Consolidated net sales revenue reached P250 billion, which was 10% higher than 2005.

Dampened consumer demand continued up to the fourth quarter of 2006, partly due to the strong typhoons that hit the Philippines. Despite weaker consumer spending, there was however marked improvement in food group sales and significant volume recovery in the liquor business.
