Southern Mindanao Cited as Nation?s Safest Region

DAVAO CITY ? This city?s notoriety as the ?salvage? capital of the Philippines did not prevent the Southern Mindanao region, where other cities also emulate Davao in dealing with suspected criminals, from getting the award for the ?Best in Regional Peace and Order Council? for the year 2004.

?Salvage? is a term widely used by Filipinos to refer to a summary execution, often by people suspected to be authorities, mainly the police. ?Salvaging,? in fact, has been widely supported and endorsed by Davao City officials, among them Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, the chairman of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC).

As Bomb Goes Off in Maguindanao, Diarrhea Forces Arroyo to Cancel Davao Visit

DAVAO CITY — A bomb exploded in Shariff Aguak, a town in Maguindanao, yesterday, June 23, the day President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was supposed to set foot on Mindanao.

The president was scheduled to arrive in this city and travel to some parts of the Southern Mindanao region on Friday but the trip was canceled after she was rushed to the hospital for severe diarrhea.

As Killings Continue, Arroyo Is Blamed for ?Policy of Terror? Vs Left

Thus said Bayan Muna congressman Joel Virador in reaction to the continued killings of activists, particularly members and leaders of his own party.
