Philippines won’t declare ceasefire with dissident groups during May 14 polls

MANILA — The Department of National Defense (DND) will not recommend to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the declaration of a ceasefire with the dissident groups during the May 14 midterm elections in order to avoid unauthorized and unnecessary movements of possible troublesome groups.

Foreign journalists barred from entering military camp in Philippines

Two journalists from the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (Focap) were banned from entering the Philippine Marines headquarters in Taguig City on 9 May 2007 for an arranged interview with jailed opposition senatorial candidate and former Navy officer Antonio Trillanes IV.

Focap is the organization of foreign correspondents based in the Philippines.

Dear friends,

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) deeply regrets to inform you
the cases regarding the forcible abduction and subsequent
disappearance of five more persons, including a mother of
two-month-old twins, in separate incidents in March and April 2007.
The whereabouts of the victims, namely Josephine Nogoy (32) of
Tarlac, Alan Bumanglag of Cagayan, Jonas Joseph Burgos and his
companion Melissa Reyes and another person (name unknown) of Quezon
City, all in Luzon areas, have remained unknown. All of the victims
were either members or have been closely involved in helping peasant
groups prior to their abduction.

Philippines: Bayan condemns slay attempt on Orly Marcellana

MANILA, Philippines — The husband of slain human rights worker Eden Marcellana almost found himself in the same situation as his wife when bonnet clad men armed with rifles attempted to kill him in Cabuyao, Laguna.

Marcellana is the 8th nominee of partylist group Anakpawis and is also the concurrent secretary general of KASAMA-TK, a militant farmers organization.
