Peaceful elections, alert military and police mark ComVal polls

Elections opened and closed peacefully in Compostela Valley, particularly in Monkayo, which was put under Comelec control due to the upsurge of violence days leading to the May 14 polls.

Brig. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commanding General of the 1001st Infantry Brigade, said that they monitored Election Day without untoward incidents but he said the military would still be in full alert until the canvassing ends.

Arroyo wants greater synergy in curbing violence in Philippines

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered today the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to harness their investigative and legal resources to curb the series of violent incidents related to the just-concluded midterm elections and unexplained killings.

International observers see poverty as major election issue

TONDO, MANILA — “We are going to vote but we are not very optimistic that our lives will be better after the elections. For sure, we will continue to face the threat of demolition after the elections.”

Whoever wins, the people of Tondo are somewhat frustrated that no one is doing enough to stop the intensifying poverty and demolition of urban poor communities in Metro Manila.
