Journalist jailed for four years after revealing politician?s affair
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has pleaded again for the decriminalisation of libel in the Philippines, after a journalist was sentenced to over four years? jail.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Region XI and the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division of the Philippine Army is getting into the bottom of the incident that deprived the Davao Penal Colony (DAPECOL) of 117 assorted handguns and high-powered firearms in a lightning raid conducted by a marauding band of armed robbers believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) Sunday in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte, some fifty kilometers away from Davao City.
The Philippine military admitted Monday that lapses could have taken place in the successful raid conducted by the New People?s Army (NPA) on the Davao Penal Colony where over a hundred firearms were seized.
Grecil Buya was a lively girl who liked to play with spiders and thought TV noontime show host Willie Revillame was a great artist. She excelled in school, finishing Grade Two with honors and with the award “Most Neat and Clean.” She took on chores, like minding the carabao. On March 31, the nine-year-old girl was killed by soldiers during an encounter with the New People’s Army. The soldiers claimed the nine-year-old girl aimed an Armalite rifle at them, forcing them to shoot her. Family and friends were saddened by Grecil’s death but are outraged at the allegation that she was a communist guerrilla.
