Mining Firms in Philippines Yield to Communists’ Demands

DAVAO CITY — A report received by Mining and Geosciences Board regional director Ed Arreza confirmed that mining firms have been yielding to the demands of rebel groups.

He bared this during the Kapehan sa Dabaw yesterday after a high-ranking military official divulged that elements of the New People?s Army have been milking the coffers of these mining companies.

“Apparently, Malacanang is not the only one fielding or funding partylist groups in this elections. Local politicians or local warlords have also established bogus partylist organizations.”

Kabataan Partylist President and First Nominee Raymond Palatino said some established political dynasties have already penetrated the partylist system by forming partylist groups in order to get more pork barrel funds for personal enrichment.

Philippines: Community Radio Empowers Comval Town

What sets off Maragusan, the farthest town of Compostela Valley Province, among the other booming municipalities is its 12-year old community radio which continues to empower the residents.

DXLM-FM 102.5 MHz ?Lanog sa Maragusan? started with garrison style broadcasting, using loud speakers to deliver news to the town folks. It ran for two years until the local government unit of Maragusan pushed to convert the system to transmitter-based.

Troubleshooter Is New Davao Prisons chief

DAVAO CITY — A noted ?troubleshooter? for the Bureau of Corrections is the new superintendent of the Davao Prisons and Penal Farm (DPPF) or Dapecol.

Superintendent Venancio Tesoro, who also served as prison superintendent of Dapecol in 1994 and in 2001, was tasked by Bureau of Corrections Director Vicente Vinarao to replace Catalino Malinao who was relieved following the early morning Easter Sunday raid by the New People?s Army on Dapecol?s armory which saw the rebels whisking away 118 firearms.
