People simply do not buy repeated hectoring by the President and her allies that charter change will bring the country to paradise and news that she is sick generates further expectations for her to step down. The survival options for the besieged President have simply depreciated.

Commentary: War on Terror Is a Strategy to Criminalize Dissent

The idea of terrorism is extended to several forms of social fight and protest. Dissident political and trade union opinions become criminalized. An environment movement such as Greenpeace or animal rights activist is even prosecuted as terrorist in some countries. Lawyer Raf Jespers of the Progressive Lawyers Network, Belgium, made these arguments during a forum of international lawyers in Davao City last month.

The advocates of constitutional change, most especially former President Fidel Ramos, House speaker Jose De Venecia and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, cannot claim to be sincere adherents of constitutional principles when their track record in governance says otherwise.

MANILA — The advocates of constitutional amendment are in their last-ditch efforts to rush the approval of their project following the junking of their petition by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) last week. Considering the brains behind this exercise, their political motives and the means they have used to clinch their objective, all the more is there reason to oppose it and to shy way from complacency.
