Duterte appoints ex-AFP chief as the new DENR exec

DAVAO CITY, Philippines—President Rodrigo Duterte appointed former Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff and retired general Roy Cimatu as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources secretary.

Cimatu will replace former environment secretary-designate Gina Lopez after the Commission on Appointments rejected her appointment last week.

The President has signed Cimatu’s appointment prior to the 15th Cabinet Meeting at the Malacanang Palace on May 7.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Ernie Abella  said that Cimatu previously served as the Special Envoy of the President to the countries in the Middle East.

“We are confident that Secretary Cimatu shall faithfully serve the interest of the country and the Filipino people in his capacity as the new DENR Secretary,” he added. (davaotoday.com)
