A mosque stands still beside the remains of residential buildings along Agus River at Barangay Bubong Madaya near the Balo-i Bridge in Marawi City. The place was once a stronghold of the ISIS-inspired Maute group. Journalists were permitted last August 30 to cross the bridge that connects Barangay Raya Saduc and Bubong Madaya, after it was recaptured by the government troops weeks ago. It was once known as a "Little Baguio" for the city's cool and fresh breeze. But today the air in Marawi smells of gunpowder. A few meters away from where journalists were traversing the bridge once controlled by armed militants, gun fighting continues. The government was also relentless in flushing out the militants in what they described as a small portion of the city's 87.55 square kilometers land area with continuous aerial bombardment.

Lakbayan 2017: A historic convergence of National Minorities

Over 2,500 Lumads, Moro people and other sectors from various parts of the country now converge in Metro Manila for this year’s Lakbayan of National Minorities for Self Determination, Justice and Peace. Lakbayan will last until September 21. ?Almost half of them c?o?me from Mindanao. Other support groups from the peasant and religious sectors join the Lakbayan?.

LOOK: President Duterte visits members of the Ozamiz City police

President Rodrigo Duterte visits members of the Ozamiz City police on Thursday (Aug. 17), a day after Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog, Sr and his relatives family killed in a police operation were buried. The Parojinogs were accused of being involved in illegal drug trade. The President awarded Ozamiz City Police Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido and six other policemen who headed the operation and vowed to the police force that he will support them whenever they face prosecution for doing their duties.

When the fighting broke ?out ?two months ago, many of Marawi’s residents refused to give up their homes, certain that the military would be able to handle the Maute --- a previously small, ragtag band of extremists who pledged allegiance to the ISIS by occupying an abandoned municipal hall in nearby Butig town.
