A statue of the Filipino hero, Gabriela Silang, was unveiled in Santa, Ilocos marking her 284th birth anniversary Thursday.
Gabriela Women’s Partylist Rep. Emmi de Jesus who graced the occasion, said Gabriela Silang’s “ideals and struggles remain relevant this day.”
De Jesus said women “remain victims of the ruling elite since the time of Spanish colonization as President Benigno Aquino, III favors foreign interests.”
Revolutionary martyr and wife of anti-Spanish rebel Diego Silang was born María Josefa Gabriela Cariño. She joined the revolt against excessive taxation and forced labor inflicted by the Spanish colonizers. She took over the revolt after Diego was killed the Spanish, but after four months of fighting, she was caught and executed with 100 other rebels.
