International Women’s Alliance slams Obama’s “APEC Pivot”

Nov. 11, 2015

DAVAO CITY – A global alliance of grassroots women activists is meeting today in Manila to protest the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit among state leaders which they call as a grand conspiracy to push military and political agenda of the United States.

In a statement, Liza Maza, current chair of the International Women’s Alliance said APEC said the APEC summit “goes beyond” trade negotiations.

“It is a grand conspiracy to ram through the military and political agenda of imperialist domination over women and impoverished peoples of the region,” said Maza.

“We condemn this latest APEC circus among imperialist powers agreeing to divvy up the wealth and military spheres of influence among themselves. This drunken party has gone way beyond niceties of trade negotiations, with Japan, China, Russia, and the United States moving their client pawns across the APEC chessboard, plundering our resources, raping our sisters, and occupying territories,” she said.

Joms Salvador, secretary general of the Gabriela National Alliance of Women also warned against an impending decision from the Supreme Court that would rule as constitutional the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) and will allow the return of US bases in the country.

“The government seems obsessed with presenting President Obama with a welcome present of a favorable EDCA ruling. This should make Filipinos realize that the real agenda of the United States is to use APEC as a scheme to build an East Asian bulwark after convincing Japan to rewrite its pacifist constitution and rearm as an aggressor,” said Salvador.
