DAVAO CITY — Vice presidential candidate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano conceded defeat to his rival Liberal Party bet Rep. Maria Leonora Robredo on Thursday, May 12.
“I humbly concede my vice presidential bid to Rep. Leni Robredo, who, by all accounts and with 96 percent of the votes already tallied, is our country’s presumptive Vice President-elect. Rep. Leni is not only leading the race, she has clearly won it,” Cayetano said in a statement.
As of 2:45 pm, Thursday, 95.85 percent of the votes were already transmitted. Robredo maintains her lead getting 35.12 percent of the votes or 13,988,939 votes. Her rival Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr got 13,774,268 followed by Cayetano with 5,661,737; Senator Francis Escudero with 4,806,654; Senator Antonio Trillanes IV with 842,391, Senator Gregorio Honasan with 758,265.
Cayetano added that while losing an election hurts him, “nothing is more painful than the sight of a divided country.”
The senator also called on other candidates to respect the results of the elections and rally behind President-elect Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte and his presumptive Vice President-elect Leni Robredo.
“Let us begin the journey toward healing and unification,” he added. Cayetano also said he is confident that Robredo will support Duterte.
“I call on the people to rally behind our newly elected leaders. It is in this crucial hour that our voice is needed the most. Let us work together and let the process of real change begin,” he added. (davaotoday.com)
