DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The association of Catholic educators are encouraging its member schools to review its policies about hazing to ensure the safety of students from physical harm.
Br. Dennis Magbanua, FSC, who is the president of the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, told reporters here on Wednesday, September 27 that schools in Manila are discussing on ways to look at the safety and security of its students.
“The response of the school is usually to look at its policies again. Then have some seminars regarding anti-hazing and protecting oneself or avoiding fraternities in schools that may be infiltrated by unrecognized groups,” said Magbanua, who is also treasurer of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines.
CEAP is holding its national convention at the SMX Convention Center in Lanang here.
Magbanua’s statement came on the day hazing victim Horacio Tomas Castillo III was laid to rest at the Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque City. Castillo, who died in allegedly from hazing in an Aegis Juris Fraternity initiation was a freshman law student of the University of Sto. Tomas, He was 22 years old.
“Being pro-life, we believe that hazing is not part of any Catholic school. We deplore the act and we commiserate with the schools that have had these experiences, especially the most recent one,” Magbanua said referring to UST, which is among the 1,500 member schools of CEAP. (davaotoday.com)
