Peaceful elections, alert military and police mark ComVal polls

Elections opened and closed peacefully in Compostela Valley, particularly in Monkayo, which was put under Comelec control due to the upsurge of violence days leading to the May 14 polls.

Brig. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commanding General of the 1001st Infantry Brigade, said that they monitored Election Day without untoward incidents but he said the military would still be in full alert until the canvassing ends.

Davao hits P3.5-M sales in National Trade Fair

THE Davao Region reaped P3,499,539.60 in sales during the recently held National Trade Fair (NTF) held in Manila last month, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 reported.

Of the said figure, P440, 235.30 accounted for cash sales; P781, 594.20 for bookings; and P2,277,710.10 for under-negotiation transactions.

IFJ outraged by Aaj TV station siege in Karachi

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is outraged by news of a four-hour long siege on Aaj TV?s Karachi offices on May 12, which saw a number of journalists injured in the assault.

According to IFJ affiliate, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), photographer Anwar Abbas received serious head injuries, two other camera persons were injured and had their cameras snatched at gunpoint by the attackers, and a reporter and camera person from the station were taken hostage as they were trapped in the crossfire.

Arroyo wants greater synergy in curbing violence in Philippines

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered today the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to harness their investigative and legal resources to curb the series of violent incidents related to the just-concluded midterm elections and unexplained killings.
